Lady Kaede (Mieko Harada) reveals her true intentions and Kurogane executes her. Enemy armies invade and Jiro dies. Still waiting for his sister, Lady Sue's, return, the blind Tsurumaru (Takeshi Nomura/"Mansai Nomura") drops her buddhist text off a cliff.
Double Deaths, Ran
After reuniting, Hidetora (Tatsuya Nakadai) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu) bond. Then Saburo is shot and Hidetora dies in response. Tango (Masayuki Yui) and Kyoami (Shinnosuke Ikehata/"Peter") reflect on death and the gods.

Lord Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai) abdicates the throne to his eldest son, Taro (Akira Terao), with the condition that he retains his formal title and privileges. He splits the three castles among his three sons, Taro, Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu), and Saburo (Daisuke Ryu). When Saburo criticizes the decision, Hidetora banishes him and the advisor, Tango (Masayuki Yui), who defends him.
Opening Credits and Sequence, Ran
After a successful boar hunt, Lords Ayabe (Jun Tazaki) and Fujimaki (Hitoshi Ueki) each hope to arrange marriages between their daughters and Lord Hidetora Ichimonji's (Tatsuya Nakadai) son, Saburo (Daisuke Ryu).
