Film Language Tag: matte painting
An image that is combined with other visual elements as part of a matte shot. Originally, matte paintings were made on sheets of glass. This allowed the painting to act as its own matte, obscuring the areas covered in paint and allowing another image to show through the clear areas. The current trend is to produce matte paintings using a computer, and to composite the painting with additional visual elements electronically
